DeAnn’s PAASS Kids, an acronym for DeAnn’s Pass Area Activities Sports and Stuff is an organization for people with special needs that started in 2006 with the DeAnn and Mike Dobbin coordinating their first baseball game after having moved to the area from Montclair four years prior. “There was nothing out here” for their daughter to participate in. “After a while, our boys were in soccer and doing activities, but we’d have to drive to Montclair and Ontario” to make sure that our daughter, Samantha, too, was involved in recreation. Beaumont Youth Baseball welcomed the family’s efforts to start a baseball program for those with special needs, and the Dobbins family was ecstatic. Eventually, DeAnn’s PAASS Kids amalgamated the baseball efforts into a single group, with a game at 10 a.m.: whoever showed up, got to play baseball. “We would make sure that everyone who came would participate,” DeAnn says.

Wally’s Carpets and Tile flooring store has a great inspiring business story beginning in the 50’s with true hometown values. Wally’s was started by Wally and Brenda Johnson in downtown San Bernardino in 1954; then, in the 1960s, moved to the property next door to where Wally’s was located until 2017. In 1982, Wally’s was purchased by Gene and Linda Gleason who had worked with Wally’s as an installer and contractor for over 20 years. Gene Gleason is a San Bernardino native who graduated from Pacific High School. Chris Rogers and Robert Foster, who worked with the Gleason’s since the 90’s, bought Wally’s from them in 2011. Winter Wish is a project made possible over twenty-five years ago by Soroptimist International of Beaumont with the support of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce. It was established to fill an obvious need when one of the schools in the Beaumont Unified School District reported that a number of children were coming to school inadequately clothed for the cold December weather. Winter Wish was born! Recipient family names were given to Soroptimist volunteers who contacted the families (some living in cars) to assess their needs. Clothing, blankets, and other necessities were purchased with money donated by the sponsoring organizations and individuals that were contacted. Naturally, the word spread! All of the schools in the district made it known that they had needy families, too. So Winter Wish grew! The gifts given the first few years were clothing or other necessities only. Although the volunteers of Soroptimist International of Beaumont and their friends remain the driving forces behind Winter Wish, all the service clubs, many businesses, churches and other groups and hundreds of individuals support the project with time, effort, money and the purchase of gifts (wishes).
